Gothic literature has been defined as "a style of writing that is characterized by elements of fear, horror, death, and gloom, as well as romantic elements, such as nature, individuality, and very high emotion." Famous examples of Gothic literature include Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Haunting of Hill House. Although Gothic literature does at times include ghosts or monsters, it is also used effectively to explore the ills of society, questions regarding sanity, and complex relationships. A particular brand of Gothic literature, termed Southern Gothic, includes traditional Gothic elements, and uses these to explore the lasting effects of slavery, racism, and discrimination that have shaped the American South.
In our short exploration of the American South through Southern Gothic literature, we will examine the ways that authors have explored complex relationships through fiction. The settings in the novels contribute to the Gothic theme--however, we will come to see that it is the characters themselves, and not the houses in which they reside, which are truly haunted.

Rilley McKenna is currently an intern at the American Center. She has a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature, with an emphasis in American Literature. Her research is focused on fictional depictions of mothers and motherhood by American women in the late 20th and early 21st century. She intends to pursue a PhD in Contemporary American Literature. Rilley was previously Editor-in-Chief of the literary journal AWE: A Woman’s Experience. She enjoys reading, yoga, and watching hockey.
