Welcome to the first meeting of the Media Speakers Series orgainized by the US Embassy in Moscow and the Forum for Cultural Engagement. Today we are hosting a virtual talk with journalist Gregory Feifer.
Gregory Feifer currently serves as executive director of the Institute of Current World Affairs in Washington. He is a former Moscow correspondent for National Public Radio. He has reported from and about Russia for almost a decade, covering domestic and foreign policy: from Russia’s resurgence under Vladimir Putin and the effects of the country’s vast new oil wealth in 2000s to worsening relationships with the West after 2012. He has also reported from Ukraine and many other former Soviet republics. His book Russians: The Power behind the People (Twelve, 2014) explores the seeming paradoxes of life in Russia by unraveling the nature of its people and what it is in their history, desires and conception of themselves that makes them baffling to the West. His other books include The Great Gamble (Harper Collins, 2009), a history of the Soviet war in Afghanistan, and Spy Handler (Basic Books, 2005) co-written with former KGB colonel Victor Cherkashin. He has written for numerous other outlets, including The New York Times, Foreign Affairs and The Washington Post. Educated at Harvard University and currently an associate of Harvard University’s Davis Center for Russian Studies, he lives in Washington with his wife Elizabeth, son Sebastian and daughter Vanessa. Follow him on Twitter at @gfeifer.
Moderated by Michael Beckelhimer, a documentary filmmaker based in Los Angeles, California. He has been a devoted Russophile since the late 1980s, when he first visited the Soviet Union. He received a B.A. in Soviet Studies at American University and an M.A. in Russian at Harvard University.
