November is National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. According to the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, in 2020 there were 574 federally recognized Indian Tribes or Nations in the United States. The month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people to the United States. Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.

To mark this Heritage Month, join us on Novermber 3 at 5:00 PM MSK for a virtual screening of the documentary film "Our Fires Still Burn: The Native American Experience" (2013) and discussion afterwards. 

This exciting and compelling one hour documentary invites viewers into the lives of contemporary Native American role models living in the U.S. Midwest. It dispels the myth that American Indians have disappeared from the American horizon, and reveals how they continue to persist, heal from the past, confront the challenges of today, keep their culture alive, and make great contributions to society.
