International Education Week (IEW), marked this year on November 15-19, is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. Today, IEW is celebrated in more than 100 countries worldwide. 

The American Center in Moscow invites you to celebrate IEW by joining virtual talks by American experts in the field of teaching English as a second language.

Our guest speaker on November 17 at 6:00-7:00 PM MSK is Tom Wiseman, the director and co-founder of English Connection school in Saint-Petersburg, Russia, and the co-founder of Resource Education, with a talk "Working with Unmotivated Students: Systematic Solutions".

Only 8% of people who start an online course finish that course. In other words, 92% of students lack the motivation to work all the way through a subject that they need or want to learn.

As educators, we cannot and should not expect all of our students to have the same level of motivation. We have to work with every individual who comes through our classroom doors. On top of that, we are judged more often by the worst results than by the best.  

In this talk, we will cover strategies designed to remove the need for long-term motivation. By focusing on effective practice that we can encourage in every student, each one of them will learn, whether they plan to or not.

About the guest speaker:

Tom Wiseman is the director and co-founder of English Connection school in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. Through his work at English Connection, Tom has consulted and trained at schools, universities, publishers, assessment groups and corporations in fields including public speaking, soft skills, customer service, and effective teaching of practices.

Tom conducts and publishes research in ESL with a focus on the question of what actions taken by top performers lead to their elite results. In an effort to expand the implementation of his research findings, he has traveled all around Russia to train professors and teachers of English.

Tom is also the co-founder of Resource Education, a project designed to provide ESL teachers with materials and guidance that increase the efficiency of their planning time and the effectiveness of their lessons.
