The Arctic has always been a place for joint scientific discoveries. The U.S.-Russian scientific cooperation in the Arctic has a deep historical context that helps us understand the challenges and opportunities of contemporary cooperation in climate science.

The Arctic is particularly afflicted by climate change. Warming three times faster than the global average, Alaska and Northern Russia are experiencing rapid sea ice retreat, permafrost thaw damaging infrastructure, and disappearing coastlines. This disproportionate threat to the Arctic is increasingly being used as the basis for science diplomacy. In building climate projections, the Arctic serves as a “laboratory” for how climate change will afflict other regions.

Pavel Devyatkin’s presentation on February 15 at 7:00-8:00 PM MSK will explore the historical context of Arctic science diplomacy, U.S.-Russia Arctic expeditions and research projects, and obstacles and prospects looking to the future. Arctic science cooperation, compared to unilateral research, can produce valuable findings and is an important part of the global effort to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change.

About the guest-speaker: Pavel Devyatkin is a Research Associate and Leadership Group member at The Arctic Institute. Pavel is also a Research Fellow at the Stanford U.S.-Russia Forum and a Ph.D. student at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow. Pavel is a New Yorker of Russian ancestry.
