Our guest speaker tonight is Dr. Paige P. Viren, an advocate for travel experiences that promote cultural understanding, fulfill personal dreams, and encourage environmental sustainability. She currently serves as Executive Director for the Sustainable Hospitality and Tourism Management Program at California State University Monterey Bay. Prior to her current position, Paige was an Associate Professor at San Francisco State University in the Department of Recreation, Parks & Tourism. She joined San Francisco State University in 2018 after ten years at East Carolina University where Dr. Viren was Associate Professor and an Affiliate Faculty for the Center for Sustainable Tourism. Her passion for adventure travel started on a hiking, biking, and kayaking trip in the San Juan Islands of Washington state and has since taken her all over the world.

Dr. Viren has been conducting research on consumer behavior and tourism for more than 16 years, specializing in adventure travel and sustainable community-based tourism in rural communities. As a public speaker, Dr. Viren has traveled to several countries (e.g., Albania, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Lithuania, Greenland, Kosovo) to present strategies for expanding the tourism market to include adventure and eco- tourism. She also consults for the private sector, including industry education programs like WildChina Academy, and has guest lectured at Penn State University, University of Tennessee, Tallinn University in Estonia, and University of Pristina in Kosovo, among other academic institutions.

Dr. Viren holds a B.S. and M.E. in Recreation & Tourism Studies from Bowling Green State University and a Ph.D. in Park, Recreation & Tourism Resources from Michigan State University. She spent more than 13 years working in the travel industry where she specialized in adventure travel and earned several certifications including Certified Travel Consultant (CTC) and Certified Adventure Travel Specialist (ATS).
