You will develop a toolkit to help create a more inclusive and equitable learning environment for all learners, including English language learners with learning disabilities. The American Center in Moscow invites English teachers to join a free five-part online workshop series entitled, “Disability and Difference in the English Language Classroom: Creating Inclusive Learning Environments.” This course will be taught by English Language Specialist, Rosa Dene David weekly between September 26 and October 24. During this course, you will develop a toolkit to help create a more inclusive and equitable learning environment for all learners, including English language learners with learning disabilities. Participants who attend 4 out of 5 workshops in the series will earn an e-certificate of participation from the Regional English Language Office.

Why participate?

Students from all backgrounds and of all abilities deserve to learn in classroom environments that are inclusive and respectful. For those students with disabilities, the English language classroom setting may present additional challenges that need consideration in terms of scaffolding classroom content and building in academic support. This five-week workshop series addresses specific issues related to supporting English language learners (ELLs) with disabilities. Participants will learn strategies and techniques to make classroom instruction more accessible to all learners, including ELLs with learning disabilities.

About the program

This five-part workshop series is designed for English language teachers. It will serve as a “how-to guide” to create a more inclusive classroom environment in the ELT classroom through a series of workshops that provide practical advice related to:

1. Identifying potential characteristics of learning disabilities

2. Developing effective teaching strategies related to the four language skills (listening, speaking, writing, and reading)

3. Implementing a universal design for learning approach into classroom instruction

4. Building test preparation into classroom curriculum and instruction

5. Supporting student autonomy through the integration of individualized learning plans, classroom accommodation, and assistive technology

By the end of the program, the participants will be able to create more inclusive learning environments for all ELLs, including ELLs with learning disabilities and diverse learning needs.

Program schedule and registration

The program Disability and Difference in the English Language Classroom: Creating Inclusive Learning Environments includes five online workshops held on Zoom every Monday between September 26 and October 24 at 5:30-7:00 p.m. MSK. The program may include additional follow-on activities after October 24.

Each online workshop will consist of 90-minutes of instruction followed by an optional self-directed study where participants will have access to a collection of materials (e.g., videos and publications) for self-study. Workshops will be held in English.

Participants who attend 4 out of 5 workshops between September 26 and October 24 will earn an e-certificate of participation from the Regional English Language Office. Workshop 1: September 26 at 5:30-7:00 p.m. MSK — Disability, difference, and neurodiversity in the English language classroom: An overview

Workshop 2: October 3 at 5:30-7:00 p.m. MSK — The four language skills and inclusive instruction: Scaffolding and classroom instruction

Workshop 3: October 10 at 5:30-7:00 p.m. MSK — Universal design for learning (UDL) in the English language classroom

Workshop 4: October 17 at 5:30-7:00 p.m. MSK — Building test preparation classroom curriculum and classroom instruction

About the instructor: English Language Specialist Rosa Dene David

Rosa Dene began her teaching career in Bolivia, and since then, she has taught in several countries. In addition to serving as an English Language Specialist in Russia, Rosa Dene is a Senior Research Analyst and a Ph.D. student at the University of British Columbia. Her research areas include critical disability studies, critical pedagogies, and inclusion in the Global South. Rosa Dene is also the Outgoing Chair of TESOL International’s Supporting Students with Disabilities. Additionally, Rosa Dene has served as the Associate Editor of the Latin American Journal of Content & Language Integrated Learning. Rosa Dene holds a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Portland State University. Rosa Dene enjoys exploring the outdoors, experimenting in the kitchen, and curling up with a good book in her free time.
