About the guest speaker:

Brian Lim, artist name Brian Pistols, stepped into the Breaking scene at ten years old. Fast forward two decades and his journey would find him as a multi-faceted resource in the Massachusetts Breaking community, whether it was practicing the craft for the love of it, competing, performing, organizing, hosting, judging, or teaching.

Brian has won competitions both on a local and national level most recently the Absolute Skills USA Tour Finals in 2018 and Cypher Cup in San Jose, California in 2019. He has also appeared at the prestigious Red Bull BC One, considered a global industry standard for elite Breaking competitors in 2011, 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2019 in Boston, Washington DC, Chicago, Boston again, and Philadelphia respectively, making him easily recognized in the Breaking community throughout various areas of the country and abroad.

As a performer, Brian has taken center stage everywhere from local community centers to fancy galas. In 2020, Brian, along with his older brother Tony, played the roles of Hip Hop Guardian Angels in Phunk Phenomenon’s “Phunk World” theater musical at Boston’s legendary Strand Theatre. Most notably, Brian and Tony were resident performers in front of 18,000 fans at Boston Celtics home games for the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 NBA seasons.

As a community organizer, Brian has worked with an extensive list of academic institutions on an annual basis such as Boston University, Tufts, Harvard, Boston College, Brown, and College of Holy Cross. On a grassroots level, Brian has also worked with various local Breaking movements all across Massachusetts including the Greater Boston area, as far north as Lowell, as far south as Fall River, as central as Worcester, Fitchburg, and Greenfield, and as far west as Pittsfield, and everywhere in between. Through his eyes, the most impactful accomplishment to date is the connections he has built with the various Breaking communities near and far from home beyond the competitions.

His ongoing community work since then would eventually be recognized by Next Level USA, sponsored by Meridian International and the US Department of State, where he served as an Artist-Educator, Hip Hop Diplomat, and Cultural Ambassador teaching Breaking in Russia in the summer of 2019. In 2020, he would be the recipient of the first ever Teknyc B-Boy/B-Girl Scholarship in partnership with the United Hip Hop Vanguard, a grassroots crowdfunded scholarship awarded to one person in the USA for upholding the cultural values and integrity of Breaking culture.

Both in 2021, Brian would become a resident artist at Boston Chinatown’s PAO Arts CenterRes Lab” teaming up with two residents to activate a local park on the theme of collective care as well as be a part of a pilot-cohort of Harvard Business School’s initiative to advance racial equity through their “Arts and Culture Organization Management” certification.

Since 2016, Brian Pistols curates "Entering ShaoLynn", one of New England’s favorite and most highly anticipated Breaking events, held in his hometown of Lynn, MA as a way to give back to the community that has raised him. It is at this event which you may have heard or seen the reiteration of “the flavor continues”, as it started out as his motto, later manifesting into the moniker of a nonprofit organization he co-founded.

Today, Brian serves as a Co-Founder, Operations Director, and Artist-Mentor at The Flavor Continues (TFC), Massachusetts’ first and only community-led nonprofit organization serving Street and Club dance communities, established in 2019; to learn more about TFC and what they are up to, follow them at @theflavorcontinues on social media or visit www.theflavorcontinues.org.
