Hip hop is one of the most well-known parts of American music culture. Originating in New York City in the 1970s, hip hop culture has been spreading around the globe and blending with local traditions and styles while nurturing positive and socially responsible artists, educators, and activists. 

We invite you to find out about the intersection of American and Russian hip hop cultures and their manifestations in big cities and small villages by joining the American Center Moscow’s NORTH STYLE: HIP HOP ED series! 

Going live every Tuesday and Thursday evening on September 20 — October 4, 2022, this online series features Russian musician and DJ Sergey Ivanov in deep and engaging conversations with American and Russian hip hop artists, who compare hip hop in their communities and cultures and discuss the effect of hip hop on youth empowerment and arts education. Tune in live on the American Center in Moscow’s YouTube channel, VK group, and Telegram channel to enjoy the conversations and performances and to ask the artists questions!

The guest speakers on September 27 at 7 p.m. MSK are New York based Fil-Am DJ/musician Boo and Russian hip hop artist Bobisch.

About the guest speakers:

Boo is a NY based Fil-Am DJ/musician. He has shared the stage with the likes of Ghostface Killah, DJ Kool Herc, KRS-1, Snoop Dogg, and Common. He has backed wordsmiths like Eternia, The Juggaknots, and Omar Offendum. In 2014 he served as a cultural ambassador for the United States, performing and conducting Hip Hop workshops with The Nomadic Wax Collective in Nepal, Mozambique, and Swaziland as part of the American Music Abroad Tour. For over a decade he has served as the resident DJ for The Trinity International Hip Hop Festival. As the DJ for Brooklyn based dance company, Decadancetheatre, he has had the honor of performing at Jacob’s Pillow. As a music producer he, along with choreographer Jennifer Weber, helped bring to life Mike Fitelson’s holiday phenomenon, The Hip Hop Nutcracker, a modern reimagining of the classic ballet by Tchaikovsky; which has toured the United States and Russia.

Lev Shishov aka Bobisch started breaking in 1999 and holds multiple titles in European and Russian events. He has been teaching dance since 2007, and some of his former students have been awarded world championship titles and are currently active. Bobisch has acted as an organizer and host of multiple hip hop culture events and international exchanges, including successful collaborations with Swedish Institute, FCE, Next Level, Otto von Guericke University, Helsinki University, Sunrise e.V. Magdeburg, Red Cross, Alumni Mentoring, Potsdam in Bewegung, Goethe Institut, and others. He has also organized and participated in multiple inclusion projects, such as Social Hip Hop Project Integrations (in St. Petersburg), Empowering Women through Art Project in the American Center in Moscow, Break Grenzen Crew Project (in Germany), and others. FLEX alumnus of 2003, recently Bobisch has focused on ecological activism, working on shore clean up initiatives, and decentralized community governance projects.

About the moderator:

Sergey Ivanov is a musician, DJ, MC, poet, independent researcher, and director of the DA EXIT NGO development director and head of the DA EXIT hip-hop education studio in Moscow. He has organized more than seven hip-hop exchange projects since 2014.
