If you enjoy reading books and watching their film adaptation, if you like comparing them and discussing them with your friends, and if you are looking for an opportunity to improve your language proficiency, Books versus Movie Adaptations: Discussion Club is for you!

In biweekly online sessions of the Books versus Movie Adaptations: Discussion Club, we are going to analyze and compare various parts of books and their screen versions. You won’t have to read a book or watch a movie in advance, as we will read book excerpts and watch movie scenes during the event.

These sessions are designed for teenagers and adults with Intermediate to Advanced English language levels.

Led by AMC volunteer Anastasiia Klepinina, a student on a gap year, photographer, active volunteer.

The books and movies we are discussing in November 2022:

• November 2 at 5:00 p.m. MSK — The Maze Runner, a 2009 young adult dystopian science fiction novel written by American author James Dashner and a 2014 major motion picture directed by Wes Ball and starring Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Aml Ameen, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster. The Maze Runner is an engrossing tale of survival for young adults. 16+
• November 16 at 5:00 p.m. MSK — The Color Purple, a 1982 epistolary novel by American author Alice Walker which won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for Fiction and a 1985 American epic coming-of-age period drama film directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, and Oprah Winfrey. It depicts the growing up and self-realization of an African American woman between 1909 and 1947 in a town in Georgia. 16+
• November 30 at 5:00 p.m. MSK — Atonement, a 2001 British metafictional novel written by Ian McEwan and a 2007 romantic war drama film directed by Joe Wright and starring James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, Romola Garai, Saoirse Ronan, and Vanessa Redgrave. It chronicles a crime and its consequences in three time periods, 1935 England, Second World War England and France, and present-day England, over the course of six decades. 18+

The books and movies we are discussing in December 2022:

• December 14 at 5:00 p.m. MSK — Nomandland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century, 2017 nonfiction book by American journalist Jessica Bruder and a 2020 American drama film written, produced, edited and directed by Chloé Zhao. It explores the phenomenon of older Americans who, following the Great Recession from 2007 to 2009, adopted transient lifestyles traveling around the United States in search of seasonal work. The screen version was awarded the Academy Award for Best Picture.
• December 28at 5:00 p.m. MSK — A Christmas Carol, a 1843 novella by Charles Dickens and a 2009 American computer-animated Christmas film written and directed by Robert Zemeckis. This classic Victorian-era Christmas novelle tells the story of a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation resulting from a supernatural visit by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come.
