If you ever sat down to create a piece of expository writing (such as an essay, article, or review) in preparation for CPE (C2 Proficiency exam) or for your English-language blog, you must have found that initially your writing may not be as lexically diverse or rich as you would hope. To gain those coveted 230 points in your exam or more likes and laudatory comments on your blog, you skim articles online looking for sophisticated words or chunks you can borrow that would upgrade your writing to the C2 level.

When you come across such vocabulary, how do you decide what is a good choice and what is a bad one? How many expressions can you take, and when does it stop being “borrowing” and become plagiarism? Is choosing such language an intuitive process or are there any specific steps to follow? In the workshop on February 7 at 7 p.m. MSK, devoted amateur writer and English language teacher Evgeniya Karabatova will guide you through her process of using authentic materials while mining for language.

In this workshop, you will:

• learn what to pay attention to while choosing vocabulary and expressions for your writing;
• explore what might be a good choice and what might be a bad choice;
• practice writing AND improving a piece of an article of your own.

This 90-minute writing workshop will focus on writing articles for CPE, but it will also be beneficial to those who are passionate about writing in general.

❕ Please note that this is a workshop, not a webinar, and participants will be expected to work on and produce a piece of writing. Join this workshop only if you intend to complete writing exercises and prompts.

The workshop is facilitated by Evgeniya Karabatova, AMC volunteer and a certified English-language teacher (TESOL, CPE, IELTS).
