The American Center in Moscow’s monthly Meet a Poet series returns on February 27 with American poet Richard Martin. Tune in online at 7:00 p.m. MSK to hear him read his poems live and answer questions from the audience!

Author of several poetry books, short fiction, chapbooks, and an anti-memoir, Richard Martin brings 15 of his poems to share with our online audience. Richard Martin is a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship for Poetry and founder of The Big Horror Poetry Series. His poems have appeared in the anthologies Aloud: Voices from the Nuyorican Café, American Poets Say Goodbye to the 20th Century, and in literary magazines in America, Europe, and Australia. About the guest speaker/poet:

Richard Martin was a Public School educator for 46 years, employed as a teacher, reading coordinator, literacy coach and Boston Public Schools principal. His most recent books of poetry are Leakage & Smoke (Spuyten Duyvil, 2023), Ceremony of the Unknown (Spuyten Duyvil, 2020) and Techniques in the Neighborhood of Sleep (Spuyten Duyvil, 2016). He is the author of Chapter & Verse ((2021) and Goosebumps of Antimatter (2018), collections of short fiction and poetry from Spuyten Duvyil Press. Martin is also the author of the White Quartet, four chapbooks from Igneus Press: Hard Labor (2019), Cosmic Sandbox (2019), Sighting Icarus (2020) and Hobo Return (2021). Additional books of his poetry include the Under the Sky of No Complaint (2013), Marks (2002), Modulations (1998). His poems have appeared in the anthologies Aloud: Voices from the Nuyorican Café, American Poets Say Goodbye to the 20th Century and in literary magazines in America, Europe and Australia. He is a past recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship for Poetry and founder of The Big Horror Poetry Series (Binghamton, New York, 1983-1996). His entire collection of poetry, short fiction, chapbooks and an anti-memoir resides in The Poetry Collection of the University Libraries, University of Buffalo, The State University of New York, Buffalo, New York. Martin lives in Boston with his family.   

About the moderator:

Christopher Merrill has published six collections of poetry, including Watch Fire, for which he received the Lavan Younger Poets Award from the Academy of American Poets; many edited volumes and translations; and six books of nonfiction, among them, Only the Nails Remain: Scenes from the Balkan Wars, Things of the Hidden God: Journey to the Holy Mountain, The Tree of the Doves: Ceremony, Expedition, War, and Self-Portrait with Dogwood. His writings have been translated into nearly forty languages; his journalism appears widely; his honors include a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the French government, numerous translation awards, and fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial and Ingram Merrill Foundations. As director of the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa since 2000, Merrill has conducted cultural diplomacy missions to more than fifty countries. He served on the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO from 2011-2018, and in April 2012 President Barack Obama appointed him to the National Council on the Humanities.
