Join us for a unique online event featuring a screening of The Girl With the Rivet Gun, an animated documentary short which takes audiences beyond the iconic “We Can Do It” poster girl to the millions of real-life women who shook the foundations of the American workplace – forever changing not only their own lives, but the very perception of what women can do. The screening of the 15-minute film will be followed by a live conversation with U.S. Ambassador to the Russian Federation Lynne M. Tracy and Emmy-award winning Filmmaker Anne DeMare about women’s leadership, and how millions of women around the world are bound by their aspiration for equity and equality. The conversation will be moderated by author Lisa Dickey.

About the guest speakers:

Lynne M. Tracy, Ambassador of the United States of America to the Russian Federation.

Anne de Mare is an Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker and recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Media and Journalism grant. She has been a Sundance Institute Fellow, and an Associate Artist with Chicago’s legendary Kartemquin Films. Her feature film exploring the realities of youth homelessness, The Homestretch, aired on PBS’s Independent Lens, winning the 2015 Emmy Award for Outstanding Long Form Reporting. More recently, Anne produced and directed the 2018 feature Capturing The Flag, a portrait of four good friends encountering American democracy at its most vulnerable, and was Co-Producer on the PBS documentary Deej about a non-speaking autist, winner of the prestigious 2017 George Foster Peabody Award. She worked closely with the late, great historian Michael Nash and NYU Libraries to create an extensive filmed archive of women who worked in munitions factories during WWII as real life Rosie the Riveters. In 2020 she released an animated documentary short based on that material called The Girl with the Rivet Gun, which won the Jury’s Choice Award at the prestigious Black Maria Film Festival and was acquired by the FDR Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park.  Anne is currently finishing post-production on This Is Where I Learned Not To Sleep, a film about domestic violence and police reform that chronicles the work of former Nashville Police Lieutenant and S.W.A.T. officer Mark Wynn. She is also honored to be working with Ford Foundation and the Greaves Family on a film preservation project focusing around a trove of historically significant 16mm footage shot by the late William Greaves in Harlem in 1971.
