The Meet a Poet series returns on June 26  with American poet Hélène Cardona. Hélène Cardona, a poet, a literary translator, an actor, and a linguist, is the recipient of over 20 awards and honors, including a Hemingway Grant and the Independent Press and International Book Awards. Hélène has written seven books which include three bilingual poetry collections. She will bring 21 of her poems to share with our online audience. About the guest speaker/poet:

Hélène Cardona’s books include Life in Suspension and Dreaming My Animal Selves (both Salmon Poetry) and the translations Birnam Wood (José Manuel Cardona, Salmon Poetry), The Abduction (Maram Al-Masri, White Pine Press), Beyond Elsewhere (Gabriel Arnou-Laujeac, White Pine Press), Ce que nous portons (Dorianne Laux, Éditions du Cygne), and Walt Whitman’s Civil War Writings (University of Iowa’s WhitmanWeb). She has also translated André Breton, Rimbaud, Baudelaire, Aloysius Bertrand, Eric Sarner, René Depestre, Ernest Pépin, Jean-Claude Renard, Nicolas Grenier, Christiane Singer, Lea Nagy, and John Ashbery. Her own work has been translated into 17 languages. 

The recipient of over 20 honors & awards, including the Independent Press Award, a Hemingway Grant and an Albertine and FACE Foundation Grant, she holds an MA in American Literature from the Sorbonne, received fellowships from the Goethe-Institute and Universidad Internacional de Andalucía, worked as a translator/interpreter for the Canadian Embassy, and taught at Hamilton College and Loyola Marymount University.

Publications include World Literature Today, Poetry International, AGNI, Washington Square Review, The London Magazine, Asymptote Journal, Irish Literary Times, Agenda Poetry, Hayden’s Ferry Review, Colorado Review, The Brooklyn Rail, Plume Poetry, Dublin Review of Books, The Los Angeles Review, Waxwing, The Warwick Review and elsewhere. 

About the moderator:

Zamira Atlukhanova is a literary enthusiast who loves reading books, discussing them, and putting words on paper. Born and raised in Dagestan, Russia, she studied in the USA and now holds an MA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Literary and Cultural Studies. She is the author of several short stories and a course on critical reading and writing at Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences.
