About Our Speaker:

Professor Anatoly Liberman is a widely recognized linguist and a faculty member in the Department of German, Nordic, Dutch, and Slavic at the University of Minnesota, USA. Born and educated in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Professor Liberman earned his DPhil from the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union in 1972. Honorary degrees from several academic societies in the US and abroad. Taught also at Harvard, in Germany, Italy, and Japan and lectured at numerous universities in the US, Canada, and Europe. Active public speaker. Areas of specialization: general and Germanic linguistics (with emphasis on historical phonetics and etymology), mythology and folklore, medieval literature (Scandinavian and English), literary criticism (contemporary Russian literature), the Golden Age of Russian literature, and poetic translation. Author of about 700 works, more than twenty of them books, published in the former Soviet Union, US, Germany, Italy, England, and Russia. The books from Russia include a volume of studies on myths (In Prayer and Laughter), an annotated translation of all sonnets by Shakespeare, two volumes of literary criticism, and a book titled Father and Son (Otets i syn), based on the diaries about the growth of the author’s son (the latter was nominated for several book prizes). One book on folklore and one on etymology received the most prestigious prizes in their categories. The books of Russian interest also include full annotated translations into English of almost complete poetical works by Lermontov, Tyutchev, and Boratynsky and heavily annotated editions of N. S. Trubetzkoy and Vladimir Propp.
