The American Center in Moscow invites English learners of all ages, backgrounds, and speaking abilities to join us on Zoom for weekly meetings of the English Conversation Club every Thursday at 20:00 MSK. The English Conversation Club is a wonderful opportunity to practice your English conversation skills under the guidance of native speakers, meet new people, and engage in interesting conversations with people from around the world.

The American Center in Moscow invites English learners of all ages, backgrounds, and speaking abilities to join us on Zoom for weekly meetings of the English Conversation Club every Thursday at 20:00 MSK

Each session, 6-8 native English-speaking hosts facilitate breakout rooms, which are divided by level of English proficiency (Beginner A1/A2, Intermediate B1, Upper Intermediate B2, and Proficient C1/C2). You are able to choose which room feels like the best fit based on your confidence in English conversation, and you can change rooms at any time throughout the meeting. Each week, discussions are supplemented by a new list of topics & questions.

The English Conversation Club is a wonderful opportunity to practice your English conversation skills under the guidance of native speakers, meet new people, and engage in interesting conversations with people from around the world. We hope to see you there!

Topics for Thursday, August 28th

Topic #1: Reading

  • What’s the last book you read? Did you like it?
  • Do you prefer fiction or nonfiction, and why?
  • Who is your favorite author?
  • Do you usually read paper books, e-books, or listen to audiobooks?
  • What’s a book you could read more than once?
  • Do you prefer long novels or short stories?
  • Have you ever stopped reading a book halfway through? Why?
  • What’s the most memorable book you read as a child?
  • Do you ever read books in another language?
  • How do you usually choose what book to read next?

Topic #2: Nature

  • Do you like spending time outdoors? Why or why not?
  • Do you prefer the mountains, the forest, or the beach?
  • What’s your favorite season of the year?
  • Do you enjoy walking, hiking, or camping in nature?
  • Have you ever visited a national park or nature reserve?
  • What’s the most beautiful natural place you’ve ever seen?
  • Do you prefer sunrise or sunset?
  • Do you usually spend time in nature alone or with others?
  • Do you like animals and wildlife? Which ones?
  • If you could travel anywhere in the world for nature, where would you go?

Topics for Thursday, September 4th

Topic #1: Languages

  • How many languages can you speak, and how did you learn them?
  • If you could instantly learn any new language, which one would you choose and why?
  • Do you think it’s more important to learn a language for travel, work, or culture?
  • What do you find the hardest part of learning a new language—grammar, vocabulary, or pronunciation?
  • Have you ever forgotten a language you once studied?
  • Do you prefer learning a language in a class, online, or by practicing with native speakers?
  • What’s a phrase or expression in another language that you really like?
  • Do you think children or adults learn languages more easily? Why?
  • Have you ever mixed up two languages while speaking?
  • Do you think everyone should learn at least one foreign language?

Topic #2: Countries and Cultures

  • What country would you most like to visit, and why?
  • Have you ever traveled abroad? If so, what was your favorite experience?
  • What’s a cultural tradition (from your country or another) that you really enjoy?
  • Do you like trying food from different countries? Which cuisine is your favorite?
  • What’s one cultural difference you noticed when meeting people from another country?
  • Do you enjoy learning about history when you visit a new place?
  • Have you ever celebrated a holiday from another culture?
  • Do you think it’s important to experience other cultures firsthand, or can books and films be enough?
  • What country do you think has the most interesting music or art? 
  • If you could live in another country for a year, where would it be?
