About the Speaker:

Dr. Marjorie Spruill, Distinguished Professor Emerita from the University of South Carolina, is one of the foremost experts on women’s history in the United States. She is the author or editor of six books on woman suffrage, including "One Woman, One Vote: Rediscovering the Woman Suffrage Movement," which was initially published as the companion volume to the PBS documentary “One Woman, One Vote.” Her most recent book, "Divided We Stand: The Battle Over Women’s Rights and Family Values That Polarized American Politics," was highly praised by The Wall Street Journal as “crucial to understanding American politics over the past 40 years.”

Dr. Spruill earned a B.A. with Honors from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; a M.A.T. from Duke University; and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in History from the University of Virginia. She has had a distinguished teaching career, including positions at the University of Southern Mississippi, Vanderbilt (where she served as an Associate Provost), and the University of South Carolina. Since retiring in 2017, she has resided in Folly Beach, SC, where she continues to speak, write, and consult on women’s history and politics.
