Hip-Hop at 50 | Transforming Communities A Conversation with Franklin Rossman

Join us for a conversation with New York-based hip-hop artist and educator Franklin Rossman. Born in the birthplace of hip-hop when the genre was just beginning to take the music world by storm, Rossman grew up wanting to emulate his idols, JAY-Z, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, and other superstars of the genre. He did just that. And then he did them all one better: He became a teacher.

Join us for a conversation with the New York-based hip-hop artist who turned his love and talent for the genre into an English curriculum that explores literacy through hip-hop, bringing a socially and culturally relevant approach to learning across schools and community organizations.

In a society that is glued to their phones, communicates in emojis, yet on the pulse of current events, Franklin’s philosophy is to bridge the gap between academics and culture. Amongst his peers and colleagues, Franklin is seen as a “translator” for his ability to effectively communicate through different mediums, to unique demographics, and across spaces. It’s a skill that has allowed him to flourish professionally, and he loves sharing that with young people.

About Franklin Rossman
As a kid in Brooklyn, New York, Franklin Rossman grew up sure of one thing—he was going to make his mark in hip-hop. The sounds and the culture surrounding him permeated the soundtrack of his childhood, inspiring his musical tastes and guiding his aspirations. He started out creating mixtapes under the name, The Incomparable Shakespeare, a name that lent a decidedly poetic air to his musical endeavors.
Rossman established himself as a talented lyricist early on and his music soon became a staple of influential hip-hop websites including COMPLEX and RapRadar. His appearances on Sirius XM’s Sway In The Morning and Showoff Radio with Statik Selektah sent the internet into a frenzy. He’s performed alongside hip-hop luminaries including Slick Rick, The Lox, and Joey Bada$$.As an educator, his work involves storytelling and creating compelling content, whether in the classroom through curriculum design or producing music videos for major media outlets. For multiple summers, in partnership with Harlem Children’s Zone, he helped coordinate literacy-based programming at Columbia University. With over a decade of experience in the classroom and the entertainment industry, Franklin remains committed to youth development.
