This documentary is a magical-realist window into life with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Combining paintings and live-action footage to reveal the emotional depth of Samuel Geiger’s physical world – with his partner, painter Lauryn Welch – while exploring disability, love, and the forms they take within the bodies and spaces we are given. The Body is a House of Familiar Rooms is about disability, love, and the forms both take within the bodies and spaces we are given. This film was featured in the 2022 World Premiere ReelAbilities Film Festival and was the 2022 Winner of Best Short Award, Indie Memphis.

Following the screening, we invite you to join a Q&A session with the film’s director, Eloise Sherrid, and the painter for the film, Lauryn Welch, moderated by Elizabeth Pringle. This interactive session promises to deliver insights into the filmmaking process, the story behind the film, and the deeper messages about disability and love.

Eloise Sherrid is a filmmaker and artist. Inspired by collage, she explores the boundary between fiction and nonfiction storytelling by mixing genres and media. Her projects have been featured in festivals nationally and internationally, including Hot Docs International Film Festival, BAMcinemaFest, Indie Memphis, and Dances With Films. They have been cited by publications and organizations including The Guardian, Hyperallergic, Design Type, Print Magazine, and the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Eloise holds a BFA ’16 from the Rhode Island School of Design and lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Lauryn Welch is a Brooklyn-based artist and a longtime resident of the New Hampshire Monadnock Region. Through painting and film, she explores the language of care and the experiences of illness and wellness through the construction of a home. Her work is influenced by locally accessible nature and ornithology. Lauryn recently had a solo exhibition at Half Gallery and has screened at ReelAbilities (multiple locations), HotDocs (Toronto), BAMcinemafest (New York), Indie Memphis (Memphis), and ArchFilmLund (Lund, Sweden). Recent group exhibitions include Shelter Gallery (New York), Spring/Break (New York), and Carlye Packer (Los Angeles). She received her MFA in Studio Art at Hunter College in May 2023.

Elizabeth Pringle, the moderator, is known for her insightful approach to dialogue and understanding of the cinematic arts.
