At this workshop, you will learn about the importance of student-led clubs in organizing student support groups. Sicoya Bellis, a NASA Community College Aerospace Scholar and current Mechanical Engineering student, will discuss the types and varieties of clubs in the USA, pulling from his experience as the current student President of the North Seattle Rocketry Club.

Alex Langenstein, a graduate of North Seattle College’s Mechatronics Associates of Applied Science degree program, will share her experience of participating in NASA’s student programs: NCAS (NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars), which offers community college students an authentic NASA experience, and L’SPACE (Lunar and Planetary Institute’s Student Planetary Ambassador for Community Engagement), which focuses on engaging the public in solar system exploration. Her talk will be mostly focused on problem-solving and working with limited resources, which is a consistent challenge for STEM student clubs.

The presentation will also feature Tracy Furutani, the student rocketry club advisor and professor of Engineering, Physics, and Chemistry. Furtani will talk about international collaboration opportunities that student clubs can offer to students.

Special guests Dogeon Ra and Gwyn Yang, president and vice-president of the HANARO student rocketry team at Seoul National University will share their experiences with the international tripartite student collaboration project involving North Seattle College and Amur State University. They will also highlight why they consider it important to have students connections around the globe.

This event is designed to inform high school and university students of the unique advantages of STEM student clubs and how this participation may help them complete real-world, tangible portfolio work that showcases their technical knowledge, social, and practical skills.
