Digital Content, Production, and Literacy: An 8-part Speaker Series

This new speaker series brings together U.S.-based experts from diverse fields such as filmmaking, podcasting, storytelling, media, and education to explore how innovative practices in digital media shape and reflect American culture. This monthly series is curated and moderated by the American Center’s Media Literacy Fellow Joe Crescente, a digital literacy expert, teacher, and writer.

About the Moderator and Series Curator, Joe Crescente: 

Joe Crescente is a teacher, writer, and digital literacy specialist with over two decades of experience in media and communications and education. He has led hundreds of seminars and online programs on digital literacy and enjoys studying how artificial intelligence, news consumption, algorithms, and technology have an impact on our day-to-day lives. He holds graduate degrees from New York University, Indiana University, and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and his home state is New Jersey. Thursday, January 30, 19:00 MSK: "What It Takes to Be America’s Most Respected Voice on Press Criticism: A Conversation with Sewell Chan"

Description: In this conversation moderated, we will explore the role of the media in the United States today, including its numerous challenges and opportunities. The son of immigrants from China and Hong Kong, Sewell Chan is a unique and important voice in American journalism whose long career has led him to the top of one of America’s most esteemed journalistic institutions — the Columbia Journalism Review. The CJR as it’s known in journalism circles, puts a mirror up to the industry, to in their own words shape "the ideas that make media leaders and journalists smarter about their work."

Speaker: Sewell Chan

Bio: Sewell Chan is an American journalist based in New York City who is the current executive editor of the Columbia Journalism Review. He had previously been the editor-in-chief of The Texas Tribune from 2021 to 2024. Prior to that, Chan held positions at the Los Angeles Times from 2018 to 2021, The New York Times from 2004 to 2018, and The Washington Post from 2000 to 2004.
