Beyond Patchwork: Why We Quilt

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at 20:00 MSK, please join us for a virtual panel discussion on quilting as a form of art, storytelling, and connection. Textile artists Heidi Parkes, Zak Foster, and Amanda Nadig will each share a short presentation reflecting on the role quilting plays in their lives – why they quilt, with whom, and how it shapes their creative and personal journeys. Tune in to ask our guests your questions live!

About the artists:

Amanda Nadig
is a textile artist who finds inspiration in keeping with and breaking away from traditions in quilting. Her hand-quilted compositions explore found shapes and colors sourced from secondhand garments and home textiles. The portability of handwork allows her to find pockets of time throughout the day to create, often alongside her children. As a full-time art teacher in the Chicago Public Schools, Nadig is continually inspired by the curious minds of her students, a powerful influence that encourages her own daily journey of material discovery, embracing the unexpected, and fearless experimentation within her quilts.

Before Heidi Parkes was born in Chicago, IL in 1982, her grandmother organized a collaborative family quilt to commemorate her birth. Now based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin her quilting and mending celebrate the hand, and her works tug at memories and shared experience. Often using specific textiles, like an heirloom tablecloth, bed sheet, or cloth tea bag, Heidi adds subtle meaning and material memory from the start. Engaging in the worlds of art, quilts, mending, and social media, Heidi is an advocate for the domestic realms, slow stitching, and mindfulness. Find her on Instagram and YouTube. She was the 2024 Pfister Hotel Artist in Residence, and is a 2005 graduate from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Zak Foster is a community-taught artist whose work draws on Southern textile traditions and repurposed fabrics. He practices an approach to design that is based in narrative and guided by intuition. He is especially drawn to preserving the stories of quilts and explores stories we tell ourselves about the past, present, and future in his work. His work has been featured in on the red carpet of the Met Gala, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as various magazines, websites, and galleries. His book THE WORLD NEEDS YOUR NEXT QUILT and the community he hosts, the QUILTY NOOK, connect and inspire quilters and makers all over the world.
