In this talk, U.S. astronaut Charlie Bolden shares firsthand insight into how space has become one of the world’s most powerful platforms for international cooperation. Drawing on his experience working on multinational missions and partnerships, he highlights how collaboration in space continues even when conditions on Earth are challenging. He also explores the role astronauts play as informal ambassadors, building trust and mutual understanding through teamwork in the most extreme environment humans operate in. Looking ahead, the talk examines why strong international partnerships will be essential for returning to the Moon, reaching Mars, and ensuring space remains a peaceful domain for future generations.

About the speaker: Charles Frank Bolden Jr., Major General, United States Marine Corps (Ret.) 12th NASA Administrator, Founder & CEO Emeritus, The Charles F. Bolden Group. Retired Marine Corps Major General Charles Frank Bolden Jr. was the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from July 2009 until January 2017. Bolden’s 34-year career with the Marine Corps included 14 years as a member of NASA’s Astronaut Office and four Space Shuttle missions. He piloted Space Shuttle Columbia in 1986 (STS-61C) and Space Shuttle Discovery in 1990 (STS-31) – the mission that deployed the Hubble Space Telescope. He served as Mission Commander on Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1992 (STS-45) and Space Shuttle Discovery in 1994 (STS-60). Today, in addition to his numerous professional affiliations, General Bolden serves as the Founder and CEO Emeritus of The Charles F. Bolden Group, providing leadership in the areas of Space/Aerospace Exploration, National Security, STEM+AD Education and Health Initiatives.
