The Courage to Compete: An American Woman’s Rise in Jiu-Jitsu

What happens when you decide to walk into a jiu-jitsu academy with no experience and no clear outcome? In this leadership talk, American Jiu-Jitsu fighter Kaz Borscheid shares how starting a jiu-jitsu practice changed the direction of her life, and went on to become the top competitor in her age group. This is more than a martial arts story. It’s a practical look at personal leadership, resilience, and growth—and how the habits built on the mat translate directly to leadership in everyday life.

On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at 19:00 MSK, please join the American Center in Moscow for a lively conversation with American Jiu-Jitsu fighter Kaz Borscheid, moderated by Tommy Borscheid.

About the speakers:

Kaz Borscheid began training jiu-jitsu in her early 40s, at a time when she was navigating a high-pressure job and searching for work that felt more meaningful and grounded in real human impact. What started as a physical challenge quickly became a turning point rather than simply another sport.

Through jiu-jitsu, Kaz learned to meet discomfort with curiosity, view setbacks as information, and build strength through consistency rather than perfection. Around the same time, her father suffered an unexpected stroke, deepening her awareness of how differently people are treated when their bodies or abilities change. Together, these experiences inspired her to leave a decades-long career in PR and marketing and chart a new path centered on long-term wellbeing, purpose, and empowerment.

Now based in Houston, Texas, Kaz trains at Torres Jiu-Jitsu under Professor Michael Torres and remains active as a competitor. A two-time Masters World Champion, Pan-American Gi and No-Gi Champion, and Masters North America Champion, she finished the 2024–25 season ranked #1 overall in Masters 5 brown belt.

Beyond competition, Kaz is a certified personal trainer, nutritionist, and holistic health coach, and the founder of Sweat Equity Wellness. Her work focuses on creating accessible, inclusive support—breaking down barriers to deep health and helping people rebuild trust in their bodies and confidence beyond the training space. Her story reflects the power of sport, movement, and mindset not only to change bodies, but to change lives, identities, and trajectories at any stage.

Tommy Borscheid is a musician, music business executive, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu brown belt.  After nearly a lifetime in music, he discovered Jiu Jitsu when he was 44 years old. He has been training for 14 years.  He believes in hard work, the power of practice, and that anyone, at any point in their lives, can make a transformational change.
